Bob served for twenty-six years in the US Coast Guard. During this period, he served on eight ships and was Commanding Officer of the CGC “GALLATIN” and CGC “VIGILANT,” conducting search-and-rescue and drug interdiction operations. He was awarded two Presidential Meritorious Service medals. Bob earned a Bachelor's degree in engineering, US Coast Guard Academy; Master's degree in telecommunications management, US Naval Postgraduate School; Master's degree in international relations, Salve Regina University; and Master's degree in strategic studies, US Naval War College.
Until his recent retirement, Bob Philpott filled the roles of Veterans Affairs Coordinator and Vice President for Instructional Services at Cape Fear Community College. Prior to that he served the college as Dean of Technical and Vocational Education from 1995 through January of 2011.
In Wilmington, Bob is a tireless advocate for veterans and military families and is active in numerous charities throughout the community, including Thumos Project, where he heads the Advisory Board.
